Lucknow: Terming the Centre's announcement for a special package of Rs 7,266 crore for Bundelkhand as a "delayed decision", the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday said that it will not benefit the local people in any way.

"The government is of the view that the Centre should sanction funds as per the proposals submitted by the state.

The special package announced by the Centre is insufficient and a delayed decision," a government spokesman said here.

The spokesman said that Chief Minister Mayawati soon after taking charge in 2007 had requested the Centre to approve Rs 7,016 drought relief package for the UP region.

However, the UPA government yesterday announced a special package of Rs 7,266 crore for development of the drought-hit region that will be shared between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

"Announcing merely Rs 4,000 crore for Bundelkhand region in UP is unfortunate and it indicates that the proposals submitted by the state for integrated development of the region were overlooked," the spokesman alleged.

The spokesman said that despite having limited resources, the state has initiated host of development projects in the area and has sanctioned money to establish an agriculture university, nine ITIs, five polytechnics and a para medical college in the area.
