New Delhi: In the wake of continuous
clashes between supporters of Trinamool Congress and Left
parties, the Centre is likely to send a team to West Bengal
next week to assess the situation.
The three member team may visit violence-hit areas
and hold talks with district administration officials before
holding meeting with top state government officials in
Kolkata, Home Ministry sources said.
Railway Minister and TC chief Mamata Banerjee has
been demanding for long to send a Central team to West Bengal
as her party has been claiming that there has been "complete
breakdown of law and order".
Banerjee had met Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on
November 26 and discussed with him about the prevailing
situation in West Bengal.
Violence on November 26 in Hooghly district, where
one person was killed and a police officer and several others
injured, triggered a TC outburst in Lok Sabha with the party
demanding that a team from the Centre be sent to the state.
After TC's Sudeep Bandopadhyay raised the issue
during Zero Hour, Left MP Basudeb Acharya countered the charge
by saying that TC was hand-in-glove with Maoists.
The war of words led to adjournment of the House for
over an hour.
The TC chief claimed that Home Minister P Chidambaram
has already written to the state government several times over
the "deteriorating law and order" situation.
