Madurai: The Southern Railway Mazdoor Union's women's wing has demanded that the Railways provide Child care leave to women staff without any preconditions.

A meeting of the wing held here demanded that women staff who visited other cities on duty be provided lodging in the respective destinations. They also sought separate toilets and rest room facilities.

Widows recruited on compassionate grounds should be provided family Planning allowance if their husbands availed the same while they were working, a union press release said.

The union also wanted reduction in duty hours and a five day week.

a mother knows the needs of the child and should be granted leave as this has been provided by government as an additional facility to working women. in this view, it should be granted to women in times of need unconditionally. only issuing a policy of child care leave and leaving it entirely at the discretion of the sanctioning authority does not make sense of the policy. guidelines to be issued specially in Railways as to when the leave cannot be denied. e.g. when a child is admitted in hospital, Std IX-Xth and Std. XII exams or final exams of any standard, special exams etc. also during vacations of the child the mother is required to be with them, hence these factors to be considered and modifications be made. thanks.
