Barpeta: Cholera and diarrhoea have
claimed ten lives, including those of seven children, and
affected 10,180 people in Barpeta district during the last 15
days, a senior official said on Thursday.
Since the outbreak of the diseases on September 29
last, deaths had been reported from seven villages of
Hazipara, Khandakapara, Dioliapa, Zaenikura, Joshihati Char,
Baglaipara and Kadong Char, Sub-Divisional District
Magistrate, Bikash Choudhury said.
Four mobile medical teams -- each group consisting
of a doctor and five paramedical staff -- are moving in the
villages and providing treatment, he said.
Besides, 119 affected people have been treated at
Howly health centre so far.
The diseases were spreading because the villagers were
apathetic to modern medicines and depended on quacks even
though health education is being provided in the affected
areas through public address system, officials said.
Besides food inspectors, the SDM said, two doctors
from the UNICEF had also visited the affected areas.
Altogether 24 water and stool samples have been
collected and sent to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital for
tests, he added.
