'Classical Language' status to Telugu: AP House expresses joy

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Assembly today expressed happiness and thanked Centre government for according 'Classical Language' status to Telugu language.

"I am extending my heart-felt thanks to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other Union ministers for understanding the issue and according classical language status to Telugu. We also extend our thanks to all members of Parliament from Andhra Pradesh as well as the State Assembly and Telugu language experts for their co-operation in achieving classical language status for Telugu," Chief Minister K Rosaiah said.

Making a statement in the Assembly today, the Chief Minister said the long-cherished dream of Telugu people came true with the Centre according classical language status to Telugu. "The Telugu Talli (mother) is endowed with 'garland of Telugu' with classical language status," Rosaiah remarked, adding that the state government was ready to provide all means and assistance to uphold the classical status.

The Centre issued a notification on October 31, 2008 according classical language status to Telugu, subject to disposal of a public interest litigation pending in the Madras High Court.

The state Minister for Culture J Geeta Reddy recently held a high-level meeting to discuss the issue and got the MPs from AP to write letters to the Prime Minister and the Union Law Minister seeking classical language status for Telugu, the Chief Minister informed the House.
