Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala cabinet Friday decided to sanction Rs five lakh each to families of eight students who drowned in a country boat accident at Areekode in Malappuram district on Wednesday.

Talking to reporters after a cabinet meeting here, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said it was also decided to construct a 'hanging bridge' at Moorkanad landing point across river Chaliyar, where the boat capsized.

Achuthanandan said Kerala High Court had informed the government that it would not be possible to spare the service of a sitting High Court judge to conduct inquiry into the Thekkady tourist boat tragedy that claimed 45 lives on September 30.

In view of this, the cabinet had sought the services of a sitting district court judge for probing the tragedy, he said.
