Cop's son accused of ramming vehicle into constable surrenders

Mumbai: The son of a cop, who escaped after allegedly ramming a four-wheeler into a police constable killing him in Central Mumbai, surrendered on Wednesday, police said.

The accused identified as Amit Bhandare (22), son of Assistant Police Sub Inspector, had escaped to Karad in Satara district of the state after the mishap at Worli area on Monday, police said.

"Bhandare claimed that he returned after his father asked him over the phone to surrender before the police," said B V Worlikar, Senior Inspector of Worli Police Station.

"Bhandare was made to undergo medical examination to ascertain if he had drunk when the accident took place," he said.

Mohan Mungase (49), attached with Local Arms department, was walking on a footpath and as he stepped on a main road to go to Public Call Office (PCO) centre, the Qualis being driven Bhandare had hit the cop near Worli BDD chawls on Holi day. Mungase died during the treatment at hospital.

Soon after the mishap, Bhandare had fled from the scene, police said.
