Bankura: A local CPI(M) leader was shot
dead by suspected Maoists at Barikul area in Bankura district
on Saturday, police said.
Rameshwar Murmu, a CPI(M) local committee secretary, was
forcibly taken away from his home at Bhulagara village in wee
hours by an armed group of 15. They told his wife and son that
Murmu deserved as he is a "police informer", they said.
Shortly afterwards, Murmu's bullet-riddled body was
recovered by security forces from a nearby jungle, police
said, adding that they suspect Maoists, active in the belt,
could be behind the attack.
Four political activists, three of them from CPI(M) and
one from Jharkhand Party (Aditya), were killed and another
suffered bullet injury in Maoist attacks in neighbouring West
Midnapore district earlier this week.
While one JP (Aditya) supporter was killed in Belpahari
area, his companion was shot at in West Midnapore district's
Patharchakra area. The Maoists on December 23 shot dead three
CPI(M) activists, including a teacher, near Lalgarh and
Salboni areas in West Midnapore.
The Maoists are active in forested pockets of three
districts, known as 'junglemahal', despite the presence of
combined security forces.
