Jhargram/Midnapore (WB): A CPI(M) worker was shot dead by Maoist ultras in Belpahari area of West Midnapore district this evening, police said.

A group of Maoists raided the house of Baren Singh (45) at Gohalbera village at about 7.30 PM, dragged him out and fired at him from close range.

He died on the spot, sources said.

Union Minister Sisir Adhikari claimed that a local leader of the Trinamool Congress, who was kidnapped on February 5, has also been shot dead by the Maoists in Salboni area.

Jaggeswar Mahto, the upa-pradhan of Satpati gram panchayat under Salboni police station, was abducted by Maoists and he was shot dead inside Bhadutola forest, the Union Minister of State for Rural Development claimed.

However, his body was not found and the district administration said it did not have any such information.

Meanwhile, personnel of the joint forces and suspected Maoists had a brief exchange of fire near the Dharampur camp of the force tonight, official sources said.

The ultras fired four-five rounds towards the camp and the securitymen retaliated, following which the attackers fled, the sources said.
