New Delhi: The Delhi Assembly today
witnessed a huge uproar over rising prices of essential
commodities forcing repeated adjournments.
The motion of thanks to the Lt Governor's address was
the only motion to be adopted as BJP MLAs repeatedly trooped
into the well.
The House saw four adjournments before Speaker
Yoganand Shastri called it a day as unrelenting BJP members
were in no mood to allow the House to transact business.
Trouble started minutes after the House assembled for
the day, when Leader of Opposition V K Malhotra requested the
Speaker to allow an adjournment motion on the issue of price
rise as requested by the party.
As Congress MLAs opposed the proposal, all the BJP
MLAs also stood up and started shouting anti-government
slogans, accusing the Sheila Dikshit government of doing
nothing to rein in the prices of essential commodities.
"At a time when all the people in the city are
affected by back-breaking prices of essential commodities,
the chief minister says the price rise has not at all affected
the people," said Malhotra.
As the din continued, some of the BJP MLAs came to the
well of the House and as several attempts to pacify agitated
MLAs did not fructify, the Speaker adjourned the House for 20
minutes.
Same was the case when the House met again at 2:30 pm
forcing another adjournment for 30 minutes.
