New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday
directed the city police to ensure protection to a woman who
alleged that police failed to take action against a constable
for threatening her after she lodged a complaint of cheating
and rape against him for hiding his first marriage and
marrying her two years ago.
A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur
and Justice Mukta Gupta, before which the woman appeared,
directed the police to provide her protection and also asked
ACP District Investigating Unit(DIU) to monitor the case.
"Make sure that no harm is caused to her as she has been
getting threat calls from the constable...," the Bench said
and directed police not to disclose her whereabouts.
Meanwhile, police said an FIR was registered against
constable Ombir posted with Ambedkar Nagar police station.
The court was hearing a letter, written by the woman,
which was subsequently converted into a PIL, in which it was
alleged Ombir has allegedly gave threat calls to her and made
attempts to physically harm her.
In the letter, she accused Ombir of trapping and marrying
her without disclosing his first marriage in a temple in March
2008.
She claimed it came to her knowledge when his first wife
attended her call on Ombir's mobile phone in January last
year.
When she objected and sought to know the reason for
hiding the fact, he started hitting her and subsequently on
several other occasions he had tried physically harm her
besides giving her threatening calls, the woman alleged.
