New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today
summoned the assistant customs commissioner (preventive) and
SSP of IGI Airport to explain why a foreign national has not
been deported as yet despite his acquittal in a case since
December last year.
A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Madan B Lokur
and Justice Mukta Gupta directed the officers concerned to be
present in person in the court on March 23 and explain the
reasons for delay in taking a decision.
The bench was hearing a foreign national's plea that
he was acquitted in a customs case by a city court December
last year but was still detained by the office of FRRO in the
name of deportation.
Meanwhile, the bench sought the amicus curiae to prepare
guidelines for the future course of action for foreign
nationals in the deportation camp.
Taking suo motu cognisance on a letter, the Chief Justice
of Delhi High Court had converted it into a PIL and sought
response from the social welfare department, Delhi government
and FRRO office.
In the letter, addressed to the Chief Justice, Gabriel O.
Ajisafe and 10 other foreign nationals alleged the deportation
camp was overcrowded and its management had failed to provide
basic amenities including drinking water and medicines to the
foreigners housed in the Restricted Foreign National Camp in
R K Puram.
