Gandhinagar: Dr Kamla was Friday sworn in as the Governor of Gujarat.

The eighty-two-year-old was sworn in by the acting Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court M S Shah in a formal ceremony attended by her family members, besides Congress leaders and MLAs from her home state Rajasthan.

Chief Minister Narendra Modi was also present at the function.

Dr Kamla, who was Governor of Tripura, was appointed as state's Governor last week by the President Pratibha Patil.

She would take charge from Maharashtra Governor S C Jamir who was holding the additional charge following the demise of Gujarat Governor-designate D N Dwivedi, who died in August this year.

Dr Kamla was first woman deputy chief minister and also the first woman minister of Rajasthan.

She was named 'Woman of the Year' in 2001 by the American Biographical Institute.

Dr Kamala is the second woman Governor of the state. Earlier, in 1978 Sharda Mukherjee had taken oath as the first woman Governor of the state.
