Itanagar: Fifty-one cadre of various
underground organisations surrendered in Tirap district
of Arunachal Pradesh in the past one year, Governor
J J Singh said on Thursday.
The governor told the state assembly that the
state government was actively considering adoption of
a surrender policy for militants so that misguided boys
and girls give up the gun culture and join the mainstream.
He said Arunachal has the second large forest
cover in the country and is a mega biodiversity hotspot
in the world.
He called upon the members of the house to ensure
that different development projects undertaken should
not be at the cost of damage to environment.
"While we embark on mega-infrastructure projects,
it is our duty to compensate for any loss of forest cover.
"For reclaiming of the abandoned lands after "Jhum"
(shifting) cultivation and degraded forests, the state
government is promoting the unique Apna Van plantation
scheme by providing subsidy at the rate Rs 1,200 per hectare.
During the current year the government proposes to
re-generate almost 7095 hectares of forest under various
schemes, he said.
