Thiruvananthapuram: As part of the Social Security Mission programme, LDF government has decided to extend free treatment to patients below 18 years, Kerala Health Minister P K Sreemathi said today.

This benefit would be available to those admitted in the general ward of five medical colleges, Regional Cancer Centre and Malabar Cancer Centre, she said.

Government would bear the cost of operations and dialysis of these patients and the scheme would come into effect from January 18, Sreemathi told reporters here.

A financial assistance of Rs.250 per month would be given to the below poverty line category where there were mentally and physically challenged persons, she said.

Another welfare scheme announced was extending Rs.250 financial aid per month to unwed mothers among scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. The scheme would start next month, she added.
