Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has called for creation of an exclusive railway zone for the northeast.

In a letter to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, made available to the media today, Gogoi urged for inclusion of the proposal in the next railway budget "in the interest of the people of the northeastern region".

One of the major causes of backwardness of the region is lack of connectivity, he said.

He requested Mamata to introduce daily Duronto trains between Guwahati and Delhi, Guwahati and Bangalore and Guwahati and Kolkata.

Besides, Gogoi sought superfast trains between Guwahati-Mumbai via Nagpur (daily) and Guwahati-Goa and Dibrugarh-Trivandrum (both bi-weekly).

Kamaleswar -
Creation of exclusive for the northeast presently will not fulfill the purpose. Strategically and commercially it needs more divisions - i) Agartala (proposed Division) for east frontier states - Nagaland (east)Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram - for more railway communication among the states directly, ii) another proposed division at Markandselek(Arunachal) for developement entire NEFA. Gauge Conversion of the existing meter gauge lines of this area should be completed and extend where necessary at the earliest. Direct trains from all divisions/zone to metro cities are required urgently to have better relationship among the regional people and strengthening united India. Prosperous and disciplined railways will lead the national unity and develop the states as well.
