Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun
Gogoi has called for creation of an exclusive railway zone
for the northeast.
In a letter to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, made
available to the media today, Gogoi urged for inclusion of the
proposal in the next railway budget "in the interest of the
people of the northeastern region".
One of the major causes of backwardness of the region
is lack of connectivity, he said.
He requested Mamata to introduce daily Duronto trains
between Guwahati and Delhi, Guwahati and Bangalore and
Guwahati and Kolkata.
Besides, Gogoi sought superfast trains between
Guwahati-Mumbai via Nagpur (daily) and Guwahati-Goa and
Dibrugarh-Trivandrum (both bi-weekly).
