New Delhi: Government is yet to take a view on the minority status to Jamia Milia Islamia, an issue which is pending before the National Commission for Minority Educational Institution (NCMEI).

The government will take view on the matter after NCMEI gives its decision, HRD Ministry sources said today. Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari has recently told Parliament that a similar case concerning the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been pending before Supreme Court.

The order of the apex court on the AMU issue will have a bearing on the minority status to Jamia Milia Islamia, she said.

Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid yesterday said Jamia Milia Islamia deserved to be a university with a minority character.

The NCMEI has issued minority status to 2,502 institution so far.
