Gandhinagar: Gujarat government has on Wednesday approved the proposal to increase reservation of women seats in panchayats and urban local bodies from one third to 50 per cent.

"The state cabinet today approved it and now a bill in this regard will be brought in the next session of the assembly in December," state government spokesperson and health minister Jaynarayan Vyas said.

The state government has decided to bring the bill following Union Government's move to amend the Constitution in order to enhance women's representations in panchayats and urban local bodies.

In last October, the Inion cabinet had also approved a proposal to amend the Constitution to increase the reservation of women in the urban local bodies from 33 per cent to 50 per cent in the country.

Prior to that, similar proposal for enhancing women's reservation in the Panchayati Raj institutions was approved by the Union cabinet.

It may be noted that Gujarat will have elections for the panchayats and urban local bodies - municipalities and municipal corporations in 2010.
