Ahmedabad: Gujarat Government has agreed to pay a compensation of Rs one lakh to next of the kin of an undertrial who was murdered at Sabarmati jail here a year ago.

Gujarat High Court division bench of Chief Justice M J Mukhopadhyay and Justice A S Dave, was informed about this decision of the state government during a hearing of a suo motu proceeding against the State of Gujarat and the Sabarmati Jail Superintendent last week.

The High Court had initiated suo motu proceeding last year against the State and Sabarmati jail Superintendent last year after an undertrial Suresh Kakadia was allegedly stabbed to death by one Mahendra Vala, a life convict, inside the prison on March 1, 2009.

The High Court taking a suo moto notice of the incident had raised doubts about the security in the prison.

Last week additional advocate general Tushar Mehta, informed the court, "The state government in principle has decided to pay a sum of Rs one lakh as compensation to the nearest relative of the deceased inmate."
