Ahmedabad: Gujarat Government has agreed to
pay a compensation of Rs one lakh to next of the kin of an
undertrial who was murdered at Sabarmati jail here a year ago.
Gujarat High Court division bench of Chief Justice
M J Mukhopadhyay and Justice A S Dave, was informed about this
decision of the state government during a hearing of a suo
motu proceeding against the State of Gujarat and the Sabarmati
Jail Superintendent last week.
The High Court had initiated suo motu proceeding last
year against the State and Sabarmati jail Superintendent last
year after an undertrial Suresh Kakadia was allegedly stabbed
to death by one Mahendra Vala, a life convict, inside the
prison on March 1, 2009.
The High Court taking a suo moto notice of the incident
had raised doubts about the security in the prison.
Last week additional advocate general Tushar Mehta,
informed the court, "The state government in principle has
decided to pay a sum of Rs one lakh as compensation to the
nearest relative of the deceased inmate."
The case was disposed off after the state government
agreed to fulfil all the suggestions made by Shalin Mehta,
the amicus curie appointed in the case by the court. (More)
