New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi has
said the result of the Assembly election in Haryana, where the
party failed to get majority on its own, was a timely reminder
that it must not be complacent and take people's verdict for
granted.
"The verdict in Haryana, though in our favour, is a
timely reminder that we must not be complacent and take the
people's verdict for granted," Gandhi remarked in her 'Letter
to Congresspersons' in the latest issue of the party
mouthpiece 'Congress Sandesh'.
The party had won only 40 seats in the 90-member Haryana
Assembly and fell short of the magic figure by six. It made up
the numbers later after Independents joined the party followed
by the members of the Haryana Janhit Congress.
She described the party's victory in Arunachal Pradesh as
"particularly rewarding" as it shows that "contrary to the
views of certain people, Arunachal Pradesh continues to be in
our national mainstream".
Gandhi said the party's win in Maharashtra was a victory
for secularism, adding "It shows once again that people reject
the agenda of division based on regional or religious
affiliations and endorse the agenda of development."
"While we can take a sense of satisfaction from these
victories, they also place upon us a renewed and enhanced
sense of responsibility to deliver on our promises. We must
work tirelessly to meet the people's expectations and deliver
on the unfinished developmental agendas of the previous term,"
she added.
Gandhi also hailed the functioning of the UPA
government saying it was consolidating itself well.
"We have begun the process of implementing the pledges
we made in our manifesto," she said, adding, "the ministries
are working out the details of policies and ensuring that they
are implemented in the best interests of the 'aam aadmi'
(common man)".
Gandhi referred to the recent initiatives in rural
development, education, infrastructure development, legal
reforms and environment and forests as "particularly
noteworthy".
