Srinagar: Normalcy returned to Sopore and
Baramulla on Wednesday after the two North Kashmir towns witnessed
violent protests over the death of two persons in separate
incidents with business establishments reopening and people
going calmly about their daily lives.
While shops and business establishments reopened in apple
rich Sopore after remaining closed for five days in protest
against the killing of a local youth in an attack on a police
station, life was also back on track in Baramulla district
town which witnessed violent clashes after a 37 year old
person allegedly injured in a firing incident last year
succumbed yesterday.
Pervaiz Ahmad and a policeman were killed on Friday
following a militant attack on a local police station in
Sopore, 55 kms from here, but the people observed a
spontaneous strike and staged violent protests, pointing the
finger of suspicion at the police and demanding a probe into
his death.
Over a dozen youth were injured in the violent clashes
during the past five days in the town.
Traffic was also plying normally in the town located on
Srinagar-Kupwara road since this morning, official sources
said.
They said shops and business establishments also reopened
while transport was plying normally in Baramulla town where
life came to a standstill yesterday as groups of youth
protesting the death of Manzoor Ahmad Bhat engaged police in
street battles.
Bhat, who was critically injured in June last year during
a protest demonstration, succumbed in the wee hours.
