Mumbai: Ministers in Maharashtra should
speak in Marathi at government and public functions, a draft
cultutal policy submitted to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan here
on Friday says.
"Ministers, administrative and departmental heads should
speak in Marathi at official and public functions as far as
possible," the policy states.
"Help of interpreters would be sought during meetings
with non-Marathi, specially foreign delegates," the draft
says.
This would help boost the status of Marathi and also
provide jobs to those who speak Marathi, as translators, the
draft policy said.
Chavan had sparked a controversy after declaring that
only those who can speak, write and read Marathi would be
given license to drive taxi in Mumbai and took a U-turn the
very next day saying knowledge of Gujarati and Hindi would
also entitle them to such license.
