New Delhi: Law Minister M Veerappa Moily today requested the Karnataka Government to set up a task force to help the Centre extend facilities to Kannada, which has been declared as a classical language.

In a statement issued here, Moily said the Karnataka Government has been "suggested" to set up a task force to coordinate with the central Government to help it extend facilities available for classical languages.

Under the scheme, an annual Presidential award is given to persons for promotion of classical language.

The scheme also provides for setting up of Professional Chairs for classical languages in selected universities.

According to the statement, as a PIL is pending in the Madras High Court against the decision to grant classical status to Kannada, the HRD Ministry had asked the Culture Ministry whether it can extend facilities to Kannada.

The matter was referred to the Law Ministry which gave a legal opinion favouring provision of financial and other assistance to the language. The HRD Ministry, the note said, is now "moving accordingly".
