Madurai: MDMK leader Vaiko and party workers
staged a demonstration here on Tuesday, in protest against the
'anti-people' stand of Tamil Nadu and the Union government on
the vexed Mullaperiyar dam issue.
Addressing the activists, Vaiko said the Kerala government's
proposal to construct a new dam downstream of the Mullaperiyar
dam would only destablise the structure. This would lead to
Tamil Nadu losing an important source of water, he said.
We are not against the people of Kerala, but when our
livelihood is affected we get angry," Vaiko said.
He claimed that Tamil Nadu has already incurred a loss of
Rs 130 crore per year because the storage level in the
Mullaiperiyar dam was reduced to 136 feet.
