Mumbai: Elaborate security arrangements
have been made in the metropolis to ensure peaceful and
trouble-free New Year celebrations.
The 40,000-strong police force has taken special
measures and would keep a close watch on New Year revellers to
avoid any untoward incident.
Police have started a special helpline for one day,
besides forming anti eve teasing squads as part of security
measures, Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Himanshu
Roy said today.
"A large-scale police deployment is being made to
ensure New Year revelry gets over without any untoward
incident. Besides deploying over 40,000 police persons on
December 31 night, we are coordinating with the Coast Guard to
maintain strict vigil along the coastline," he said.
After the Mumbai terror strikes last year, the city
had witnessed a subdued New Year celebrations but this time
police are expecting huge crowds at Gateway of India, Girgaon
Chowpatty and Juhu beach.
With the metropolis witnessing eve-teasing incidents
during New Year celebrations in 2007 and 2008, special squads
have been formed to prevent such cases, Roy said.
The teams, which will also comprise policewomen, will
be stationed at potential trouble spots, he said.
"The helpline number is 22633333. CCTVs at various
places will monitor crowd movements," he said.
