Mumbai: The prosecution on Tuesday opposed the
bail plea of encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma, arrested in
an alleged fake encounter case, stating it was a serious
offence.
Sharma, who was arrested on January 7, had approached the
sessions court seeking bail stating that he was falsely
implicated in the case and that the police were fabricating
evidence against him.
The prosecution today filed the reply opposing the plea
on the grounds that Sharma, if released on bail, would
intimidate the witnesses and tamper with evidence.
The sessions court would hear arguments on the plea on
February 15.
The case relates to the killing of Ramnarayan Gupta alias
Lakhan, an alleged associate of gangster D K Rao, on November
11, 2006 in suburban Versova.
Three constables -- Ratnakar Kamble, Tanaji Desai and
Vinayak Shinde -- and three others have also been arrested
along with Sharma in the case.
The arrests were made by a Special Investigation Team
(SIT) formed at the instance of the Bombay High Court.
Lakhan's brother Ram Prasad Gupta had filed a petition in
the high court alleging that Lakhan was shot dead by a police
team led by Sharma.
