Mumbai top cop Maria threatens to quit over 26/11 book Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: Mumbai Police Joint Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria on Thursday threatened to quit if charges levelled against him by Vinita Kamte about his role during last year’s Mumbai attacks were not clarified.

In her book titled 'The Last Bullet', Vinita, wife of IPS officer Ashok Kamte who died fighting terrorists during 26/11 Mumbai attack, has questioned why Maria, who took charge of Police Control Room during the 59-hour siege, had denied knowledge of how Ashok, Additional Police Commissioner (East), went to Cama Hospital.

"My book is based on the facts given by the Mumbai police using the RTI Act," she said.

Vinita said she was initially reluctant about writing the book "but my desire to find out the truth about what happened on the night of November 26 leading to my husband's death ultimately triumphed."

The book was released on Tuesday by noted social activist Aruna Roy and former Mumbai Police Commissioner Julio Rebeiro at a function organised at hotel Taj Mahal, one of the scenes of 26/11 terror attacks last year.

Mumbai cops have recently come under a hailstorm of criticism from its own men, Government and the kin of those who lost their lives.

The then ATS chief Hemant Karkare's wife lambasted the police for losing the bullet-proof jacket of her husband. The jacket was said to be not upto the mark, a reason that Karkare succumbed to bullets.

On Wednesday, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram also criticised the Mumbai police for shoddily dealing with the jacket.

The then Mumbai Police Commissioner Hassan Gafoor also told a magazine that there were some senior IPS officers who refused to hit the gounded on the dreaded night. The named officers have threatened a court case againt Gafoor.

Kamte has meanwhile said that she got all the information through RTI after those in power refused to divulge any.

Kamte has criticised Maria, for denying that he did not guide her husband to Cama hospital.

Maria has reportedly sent a letter to state Home Minister RR Patil about the charge and has asked him to take action and is set to meet the minister on the matter.

He has called the allegations baseless and has asked for a chance to present his side of the story.

But the Maharashtra government today said it has not got any letter from Maria, with the CM Ashok Chavan denying any knowledhe about the letter.

"No such letter has been received," senior Home department sources told PTI wishing not to be identified.

Kamte has meanwhile said that she got all the information through RTI after those in power refused to divulge any.

Looking at the whole episode including the fact that Mr. Karkare`s fake bullet proof vest went missing, again the file pertaining to fake bulletproof vest went missing, the grave lapses in control room like after the control came to know about the karkare`s gunman`s version that firing was going on, why did control room not inform to Mr. Karkare who was just behind. It is safe to assume that control room was being accessed by terrorists, through their masters. Fitness of things demand that Mr. maria resign for the sake of impartial enquiry.

As far as I know from the news paper reports once Kasab was caught someone senior need to be at the HQ for questioning and his safe custody to unravel all truths. Maria appears to be a diligent officer whose image should not be tarnished and we need to support him to carry on the good work. But Mrs Kamte, Mrs Karkare and other vsaliant family members of other slain officers have lost their dear ones and question does and would come in their mind as to how their near ones lost their lives. The officers were on duty without adequate police force at their command. It is the system failure more than anything else. Mrs Karkare is right when she is demanding for the bullet cover which Mr. karkare was donning at the time of the incident. It is very much a possibility the jackets worn by them must have been a sub standard amd the Govt would have destroyed it to clean the evidence. Our Security forces whether in borders or in our Police force need to be given state of art equipments to control this menace. Until then many Kamtes and Karkares would continue to question the Government .
