Kolkata: The West Bengal government has decided to admit an additional 695 students in its medical colleges and would improve their infrastructure accordingly, Health Minister Surya Kanta Mishra said today.

Replying to questions in the Assembly, Mishra said as per a central directive, the admissions would be given in existing medical colleges.

He said accommodation of the additional students would require construction of additional classrooms and hostels, besides bringing in more teachers.

While the Centre will part-fund the infrastructure expansion, the state will have to bear the major part of the expenses, he said.

Pointing out that the state needed 19 medical colleges against its present strength of nine, he said a College of Medicine would become operational from this year at Kalyani in Nadia district.
