Patna: Members cutting across party lines
on Tuesday walked out of the Bihar Assembly when their demand that
legislators who had been appointed chairmen of the managing
committees of government schools should be empowered to
recommend suspension of headmasters, was turned down.
The members demanded that they should be empowered to
recommend suspension of headmasters for ignoring them and
taking unilateral decisions for development of schools.
Human Resources Development minister, Harinarain Singh
said that stern action had been initiated against headmasters
for trying to usurp the powers of MLAs appointed as chairmen
of managing committees of government schools.
Singh refused to bow to the demands of the members
saying that the decision would be violative of government
rules and the law.
Replying to a starred question raised by Satyanarain
Singh (RJD), the minister said the government had suspended
five headmasters for extending their brief and ignoring the
recommendations of the managing committee in smooth running
of government schools and action would be taken against other
erring headmasters.
Dissatisfied with the reply, the RJD led opposition
including Left parties staged a noisy walkout alleging that
the state government was out to belittle the status of
legislators.
