Bhubaneswar: The Orissa government today
decided to launch a special drive from January 1 to identify
disabled persons and provide them with kits, officials said.
Chief minister Naveen Patnaik announced the
implementation of the one-month special drive after reviewing
several programmes launched for the welfare of handicapped and
disable persons.
This programme will be operational in all the 30
districts of Orissa with help of doctors, they said, adding
identification of disable persons would be helpful for
proper implementation of several welfare schemes.
In his Independence Day speech, Patnaik had announced
a package for disabled persons including enhancement of
allowance from Rs 500 a month to Rs 700 a month for the
students of special schools. Nearly 3,000 disabled students
could benefit from this package, they said.
Besides this, they said about 8,000 disabled students
studying in other schools, also get the enhanced allowance
announced by the government.
The government had also constructed barrier free access
at 77 public places for smooth movement of disable persons,
they added.
