Bangalore: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Wednesday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had responded positively to the state government's appeal for higher allocation of funds to take up relief works in the flood affected districts.

Addressing the Police Commemoration Day Parade here, he said he was "overwhelmed" by the response from the Prime Minister who expressed his serious concern about the people affected by floods in North Karnataka.

Yeddyurappa, who led a delegation of ministers that met the Prime Minister in Delhi yesterday, said "we were really overwhelmed by Singh's response. I thank the Prime Minister for sending teams of officials to survey the flood-affected areas in the state".

He said the state government had already released Rs 600 crore to take up flood relief works in the 15 affected districts. The government has also initiated steps to shift villagers from 224 flood-prone villages and identified 5000 acres of land to relocate them.

"We will complete building of new villages with all amenities in one year's time. The people of these villages would be convinced on the need to relocate", Yeddyurapp said, adding the affected would be provided houses built by the government and those who had cattle would be given bigger plots.
