Srinagar: Social activist Swami Agnivesh today appealed to Prime Minister to initiate "unconditional" talks with all stakeholders to resolve the Kashmir issue.

"We are concerned over the obtaining situation in the valley for the past nearly three months. We are lodging our protest against the oppressive measures against the innocent people," Agnivesh told reporters after members of the civil society from various parts of the country led by him staged a peaceful demonstration in municipal park here.

Agnivesh, who met state Governor N N Vohra and chairman of moderate Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umer Farooq yesterday, said there should be no preconditions for talks.

"I urge Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to initiate unconditional talks with all stakeholders to end this bloodshed in Kashmir," Agnivesh said.

Among those who took part in the demonstration were Admiral(Retd) L Ramdas, Mohini Giri, Dominic Emmaneul, Mazhar Hussain, Nusrat Andrabi, Tasnim Akhtar and former chairman of public service commission Mohammad Shafi Pandit.

``are stone throwers innocent?
are those who disrupt public life innocent?``

dude, disruption of public life may not be a priority problem for those who have no public life without threat of death.

sure, the stone throwers are not absolutely right. but then, is it realistic for a community losing their children, friends and brothers to worry about public inconvenience? the armed forces act in a way in kashmir that in any other place in india would never be tolerated. there, no one cares to stop them as long as kashmir doesn`t inconvenience our public image by suffering too loudly.

i am grateful to swami agnivesh. i have been in impotent anguish at being a part of the nation that indulges in these inhuman practices and even after them becoming such a huge problem, doesn`t out and out apologize and change. india`s shining brings tears to many eyes.

and what a miracle compassionate listening has brought about. geelani is willing to have talks. perhaps the end of the nightmare is in sight.
