Kolkata: The administration could consider the rehabilitation package announced by the state government for a surrendered Maoist, suspected to be involved in the May 28 Jnaneswari train mishap, if he applies for it.

"We will inform Giri about the rehabilitation package. If he agrees we will certainly recommend his case to the state government for rehabilitation," IG (Western Range) Zulfikar Hasan told reporters today.

Jiten Giri, against whom several cases including murder, sedition, arson, possession of illegal arms, loot and conspiracy were pending, had surrendered in a court on July 26.

IG (Law and Order), Suraji Kar Purokayastha said "The rehabilitation package was announced on June 21 and we are considering all cases after that date."

The 37-year-old, a resident of Moraboni in Jhargram sub-division and a Maoist squad member for the last three years, is suspected to be involved in the Jnaneswari train mishap.

Police also suspect his involvement in the Sildah EFR camp attack and the abduction of Sankrail officer-in-charge, Atin Dutta.

According to the package announced, the West Bengal government would provide a fixed deposit of Rs 1.5 lakh for three years and Rs 2,000 each per month.

The surrendered cadres would also be paid for the arms and ammunitions that they deposited to the security forces.
