Mumbai: An unidentified person claiming to be member of terror outfit, Al Qaeda, telephoned at Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan's official residence and enquired about his whereabouts.

"The caller who introduced himself as the member of Al Qaeda threatened phoned at 'Varsha' bungalow yesterday and wanted to know whereabouts of the Chief Minister," a senior police official said.

"It appears to be a prank call. We are probing to know where the call was made from," Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said.

The country has been put on high alert following Intelligence inputs that Pakistan-based terrorists may strike during the festive season.

The Centre has asked state governments to take all steps to foil attempts by militant groups, particularly Lashkar-e-Taiba.
