Panaji: Goa University Registrar Mohan
Sangodkar on Friday offered to resign from the post after he was
embroiled in a controversy for allowing Congress leader Rahul
Gandhi address a political meeting in the university campus,
last Tuesday.
"I will resign. I am meeting chancellor and tendering
my resignation," Sangodkar told reporters after he faced
the fury of BJP Yuva Morcha activists this afternoon. "I am
holding myself responsible for everything. I will resign
owning the responsibility," Sangodkar said.
The Registrar found himself in a tight spot after Goa
Pradesh Youth Congress Committee organised a political meeting
with Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi in the university
campus.
Gandhi, who was allowed to interact with the students
on the University ground on Tuesday, later addressed Youth
Congress members in the University's administrative building,
sparking the controversy.
Immediately after Gandhi?s visit, Sangodkar had
clarified that Youth Congress had made 'inappropriate use' of
the administrative building. He had also said the university
will take necessary action in this regard.
BJP, main opposition in the state, had gunned for
the registrar?s head. Leader of the Opposition Manohar
Parrikar, addressing a press conference here on Thursday, had
demanded the dismissal of the Registrar.
