Jammu: J-K government on Thursday said that 939
buildings were vacated by security forces last year in the
state and asserted that the local police will get a major role
in internal security duty.
"As many as 939 buildings have been vacated by the
security forces in J-K. These include 311 government
buildings, 590 private buildings, 30 hotels and eight
cinema halls so far," state Law and Parliamentary Affairs
Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar Sagar told the Assembly.
He was responding to a resolution moved by PDP members
on withdrawal of security forces from civilian areas and
revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in J&K.
The Minister said that Omar Abdullah government has
always emphasised on making sincere efforts "to mitigate
sufferings of the people and create conducive atmosphere for
zero human rights violation".
The Minister said the coalition government had quickly
responded to the security related incidents that happened at
Bomai Pakherpora in Baramulla and Nishat where enquires were
conducted and the persons responsible for them booked.
It was for the first time in the past 20 years that
security forces handed over their personnel to local police
for interrogation in the killing of a young boy, he claimed.
Regarding revocation of AFSPA, Sagar said that efforts
have been made to bring the state police to the forefront. He
also referred to the statements of the Prime Minister and the
Home Minister, maintaining that the local police will get
a more prominent role.
