Sena goons attack channel for criticising Bal Thackeray Zeenews Bureau

Mumbai: Shiv Sainiks on Friday attacked and vandalised the office of a Hindi and Marathi TV channel of Network 18 group at Vikhroli in Northeast Mumbai on the pretext of the channels reportage against Bal Thackeray.

Shiv Sena MP and the editor of its mouthpiece Samna, Sanjay Raut, said the Sainiks had attacked the media offices as it was misquoting Bal Thackeray's article on Sachin Tenduljar. Thackeray had criticised Sachin for saying Mumbai is for everybody.

Seven people have been arrested in this regard.

Journalists, who were present there, bore the brunt of the rampaging mob of around twenty five people. Some of the staffers were grievously injured in the incident.

The attackers warned the journalists to not to report anything against the party in the future.

“If you say anything against Shiv Sena or Bal Thackeray, we will not tolerate it,” the attackers reportedly said.

The attackers were looking for the editor-in-chief of the channel and said ‘we will teach him a lesson’.

Reacting to the horrific incident Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said, “The culprits will definitely be booked under the law.”

“I don’t believe in such system which resorts to violence,” he added. He said seven people have been arrested in this regard. "Let me assure the media and the people of Maharashtra that the government will not be a mute spectator for this. We will go after those who inspred these hooligans," he added.

He expressed shock at Sanjay Raut taking responsibility for the attack.

Commenting on the incident Congress MP from Mumbai Priya Dutt said “Our party condemns such incidents and will ask the government to take action against the culprits.”

Meanwhile, describing the attack on the offices of a prominent Marathi news channel as a "cowardly act", Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil today said the culprits would be traced and booked without delay.

"This attack is an act of cowardice," Patil told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

Assuring adequate protection to all media establishments, he said the government would make the organisation responsible for the act pay the compensation for the damages if its involvement is proved in the investigations.

Asked if the government would act against the suspected Shiv Sena leaders involved in the act, the minister said, "we shall act against those found guilty after completing the investigations."

PP TALWAR - India
In democratic India our constituton entails freedom of speech and expresson for all, including the media. But is shameul that the goons of Shiv Saina by taking law into their hands had brutally attackd the CNN/IBN staff, including women in Mumbai and pune, causing physical injuries to the editorial staff and extensive damage to the property. This is not the first time the Shiv Sainiks have indulged in hooliganism and such unlawful activities. On top of this, the Shiv Saina officials claim responsibilty for such an orgy and justify this attack on CNN`IBN. Since such unlawful activities can not be tolerated in any democratic society, will Maharashtra government take stern action against the hooligan Shiv sainiks to maintain peace and harmony in the state also build confidence in the media.

To Varun Sharma, as he is stating that Sikhs & Muslims are becoming anti nationals how about Shiv Shena are doing, they never say as an Indian, they feel proud to be called as Maharashtrans rathen than Indian. are they pro Indians and how about Sadhwi? what she was trying to do and still her culprits are following the same. She was trying to seprate as Hindu Rashtraya. Have you forget the Malegaon blast, Blasit in Shahi Masjids in New Delhi and Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad. Are they Prp Nationals. Please Varun before pointing out fingure to others think other 3 fingures are pointing to you first. I realy condemn the attack on IBN Chanels by Shiv Sanik Terrorits

It is not justified to attack a news channel, but as some journalist say it is the attack on democracy. I verywell know these English language channels are very happy to show biased anti Hindu news. I being an engineering graduate, stopped watching these biased news channel especially the indian english news channels. In a recent church attack at mangalore, only the views of anti hindu are expressed and not a single interveiws of Hindus were shown. Why? If they act unbiased (it is not secularism) way more such attacks can be expected not only in Mumbai but everywhere in india.

Shiv Sena has done the right thing because the channel IBN is always against the sena and it is the only agenda behind their operation. It seems that the congress govt is funding them to create such nuisance against them.

The act of the Shiv Sainiks assaulting the staff and vandalizing the office of IBN Lokmat reflects the state of confusion and lack of discipline in the party. The statement of Sanjay Raut, Member of Parliament, justifying the act is highly deplorable. A civilized society cannot allow this manner of protest, which out to be in the form of peaceful dharna, rally, signature campaign etc.

I welcome the movement by CNN-IBN asking for united fight of all media houses. But where were they when ZEE News office were attacker, north indians were bitten on the roads. Don`t you think that news channels are more busy in MASALA news than real journalism. People are quite and not able to express their views freely because of non enforcement of law on these criminals. MUMBAI IS FOR ALL like Delhi, Noida, Banglore, Chennai, Kolkatta. In these cities nobody force you to speak in their local language. Then why not in mumbai/ Bombay.
