Mumbai: A Shiv Sena delegation led by party executive president Uddhav Thackeray has asked Governor K Sankaranarayanan to set up a separate statutory development board for Konkan and north Maharashtra regions.

The delegation, which met the Governor at Raj Bhawan here yesterday also requested him to extend the term of three Statutory Development Boards (SDBs) for Vidarbha, Marathwada and rest of Maharashtra, Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe told a news agency.

"The tenure of these boards, established in 1994 for ensuring regional balance in development, ends on March 31 and the delegation explained to the Governor that the tenure should be extended to ensure development of these backward regions," Gorhe said.

Thackeray requested the Governor that he should begin the address to the Legislature on March 18 in Marathi.

The Governor told the delegation that he knows Marathi and Hindi and would be glad to start his speech in Marathi, a Sena leader said.

Statutary Development Boards can not be set up for north Maharashtra and Kokan. There is a lack of general , historical and constitutional knowledge in this demand. Constitutional amendment - Article 371(2) provides for Developmental Board for Vidarbha, Marathwada and rest of Maharashtra - for equitable allocation of developmental funds and also in education and employment.
