Shimla: Infighting within Congress today
forced postponement of mayoral elections of Shimla Municipal
Corporation to tomorrow as there was no consensus on
candidate.
"Election for the post of a woman mayor to SMC has been
postponed for tomorrow because of lack of consensus in the
corporation today," Director, Town & Country Planning,
Rajneesh Kumar, who conducts the poll, told PTI.
The post of mayor has been reserved for woman this time
from general category under the rotation system. The mayor has
a two-and-a-half year tenure.
In the 25-member house, Congress has 15 counsellors.
But, factional feud between corporators owing allegiance to
Union Steel Minister, Virbhadra Singh, and his known detractor
and Leader of the Opposition in Assembly, Vidya Stokes, eluded
a consensus on nominees for the post of mayor and deputy
mayor.
Madhu Sood and Seema Chauhan have emerged as
front-runners for the post of Mayor. While Virbhadra supports
Chauhan, Sood is backed by Stokes.
The BJP has eight members.
