New Delhi: Three alleged robbers were arrested on Saturday after a gunbattle with police near a Metro station in east Delhi in which two persons, including a Constable, were injured.

Police claimed they have thwarted an attempt to rob a bank after arresting the robbers. Two of the robbers managed to flee from the spot.

The incident was reported from Bholanath near Shahdara Metro station in the jurisdiction of Farsh Bazar police station at around noon, a senior police official said.

The personnel of Central District's Special Staff had gone to the area to nab a gang of robbers on a tip off, the official said.

"Five persons came from Meerut to rob a bank here. We had prior information and when encountered, they opened fire at police personnel who retaliated," the official said.

A Constable and a robber were injured in the incident. A bullet hit the robber's leg, the official said. Two robbers, including gang leader Gulu, managed to escape from the spot.

Fifteen rounds were exchanged between police and robbers, who belonged to the Gulu Jaat gang.

The injured are undergoing treatment at the Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital.
