Mumbai: A 20-year-old youth, hailing from
Gujarat, has been arrested for allegedly molesting and robbing
a foreign national from South Korea of mobile phone and cash
in a moving suburban train, Railway Police said on Tuesday.
Police claimed to have solved the case within eight hours
of the crime by arresting the accused, Ketan Upadhyay.
According to police, the 21-year-old South Korean victim,
who arrived here in October last on tourist visa, yesterday
boarded a ladies' second class compartment of the Malad-bound
fast local at Mumbai Central railway station.
"The victim was alone inside the coach. As the train was
pulling out of the station, Ketan also boarded the same
compartment. He pounced on the victim and threatened her to
part with all she had, minutes before the train reached the
next station, Dadar," Bharat Rane, Senior Inspector of Mumbai
Central Railway Police Station, said.
"Ketan also molested the South Korean and bit her finger.
He jumped from the train as it slowed down at Dadar station
with her mobile phone worth Rs 5,000 and Rs 120 cash and
disappeared in the crowd," Rane said.
The victim, who stays in suburban Bandra, lodged a
complaint with police following which a special team was
formed to trace the accused, Inspector Rane said adding that
sketch of the accused was also prepared.
While the search was on, the accused was noticed by the
victim, who was with the special team, on platform number
3 at Mumbai Central Station, police said.
Ketan tried to flee from the scene soon after the victim
noticed him, Rane said adding the police chased, nabbed him
and the mobile and cash were recovered from him.
Ketan used to travel to Mumbai from Surat on daily basis
in train and commit such crimes before returning to his
native place, police said adding he was arrested by police in
connection with robbery case in 2004.
