Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has appointed Swami Prasad Maurya as new leader of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council, replacing Naseemuddin Siddiqui.
Maurya, who recently won the Assembly bye-election from Padrauna and was elevated as cabinet minister, held the post earlier. He had to leave it after his tenure in the Upper House came to an end.
The newly appointed leader, who is also the state president of BSP, is considered to be close to Mayawati.
Siddiqui, a cabinet minister, is already incharge of a number of departments including PWD, Housing and Excise.
