Chennai: Two Tamil film comedians have accused
each other of making defamatory remarks over land deals and
threatened to initiate legal proceedings seeking Rs 25 crore
in damages.
Popular comedian Vadivelu issued a legal notice through his
counsel R C Paul Kanagaraj to Singamuthu, demanding an
unconditional apology and Rs 25 crore compensation from him.
He alleged Singamuthu had made defamatory remarks in the
print and visual media that he (Vadivelu) had degraded
Tamil thespian late Sivaji Ganesan. The notice said if
Singamuthu did not tender an apology, legal proceedings would
be initiated against him, seeking damages.
Singamuthu, in a legal notice to Vadivelu through his
advocate A Arivazhagan, accused him of defamation and sought
an unconditional apology and a compensation of Rs 25.50 crore
for his remarks in connection with certain land deals.
He also threatened to initiate legal proceedings against
Vadivelu if he did not apologise.
The two comedians are locked in a tussle over land deals.
Singamuthu had last week filed two anticipatory bail
applications in the Madras High Court, apprehending arrest in
connection with a complaint lodged by Vadivelu with the city
police, alleging defraud by two of his close associates to the
tune of several crores of rupees.
He claimed a 'false' complaint had been filed by Vadivelu
due to previous enemity.
Vadivelu had lodged a complaint with the Police
Commissioner, alleging some of his associates had taken money
from him, promising purchase of land but had failed to do so.
