Srinagar: A teenaged boy was killed and at least six were injured in clashes between stone-pelting protesters and police who fired teargas shells in different parts of the city this evening to restore calm.

The boy, aged 16 years, was hit by a teargas shell on the head near Gani Stadium in Rajouri Kadal area in the interior of the city, official sources said.

He was rushed to Soura Medical Institute where he succumbed to his injuries, they said adding the police burst teargas shells to disperse the stone-hurling mob.

The old city has been witnessing violent clashes between the youth and police especially on Fridays and Sundays for the past two years.

As news of his death spread, clashes broke out in adjoining Gojwara, Nowhatta and other areas leaving at least six injured.

Adequate police have been deployed in trouble-torn areas, where the situation was tense, to maintain law and order.
