Ahmedabad: Swine flu claimed three more lives in Gujarat taking the death toll due to the virus in the state to 170.

According to the officials of the state health department, 28-year-old Ghanshyam Patel succumbed to the infectious disease at civil hospital here today while two others identified as Valiben Karsanbhai (7) and Ruqiya Fakirbhai (47) died at GG hospital in Jamnagar and general hospital in Bhavnagar respectively yesterday, but their deaths were reported today.

Meanwhile, fresh cases of swine flu were reported from Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, Amreli, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar, they said. So far, 965 persons have been tested positive for H1N1 infection, they added.

Of the 170 deaths so far, eight were from Rajasthan, who had come here for treatment while rest were from the state, officials said.

Rajkot to have swine flu testing laboratory

The city will soon have a laboratory for testing swine flu samples, Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said today.

Talking to mediapersons here, he said Rajkot is a medical hub for Saurashtra and Kutch regions. A large number of people from these regions come to the city for treatment and therefore the government has decided to start a laboratory with bio-safety grade hospital here, the Minister said.

The laboratory will start functioning within a week, Vyas said, adding the facility will have experts to conduct swine flu test.

Currently, samples from here are being sent to Ahmedabad for H1N1 test, which delays swine flu treatment, he added.
