Tiruvannamalai: Tamil Nadu Health Secretary on Tuesday asked for a departmental enquiry into the death of a 20-year-old woman and an infant on Saturday. The two died in a hospital after doctors and a nurse failed to attend the 20-year-old Kanimozhi who gave birth to a still-born.
An FIR has been filed by the family of the woman against the Tiruvannamalai hospital.
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary VK Subbaraj said prima facie it appeared to be a case of medical negligence. “This is a serious problem. A probe has been ordered and a report will be submitted in a day or two. Action will be taken against the guilty,” he said.
Kanimozhi's family says that apathy led to her death, but the hospital denies it, saying hers was a complicated case.
"As it was Diwali, the nurses wanted to go home early. At no point of time did a doctor attend to my daughter,” Kanimozhi’s mother told a TV channel.
A hospital doctor said, "The baby & the mother developed complications suddenly. The duty doctor was on call. By the time she rushed to the centre, both of them died."
M Pandian, SP, Tiruvannamalai said that cases of criminal negligence has been registered against the two doctors and two nurses.
