Bhopal: An International Conference on
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Industrial Disaster
with a focus on Bhopal Gas Tragedy will be begin here on
December 5, to deliberate on issues including disaster
management and national as well as international laws in the
aftermath of tragedy.
The two-day conference is jointly organised by the
National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal in
collaboration with National Institute of Disaster Management,
New Delhi, NLIU Director Shiv Shankar Singh said today.
"There was an utter failure on the part of law in
providing medical aid, relief, compensation and rehabilitation
to the Bhopal gas victims as there is no national level legal
mechanism to deal with such disasters in the aftermath," Singh
said.
Earlier, there was little awareness on the issue of
industrial disasters and people thought that disasters meant
only natural calamities, he said.
The Disaster Management Act, 2005 tries to address
these issues... still lot of things are needed to be done to
tackle the problem, he said.
The conference, which will be organised soon after
the anniversary of Bhopal Gas Tragedy, which claimed over
15,000 lives and maimed several others, will endeavour to find
solutions to these problems by deliberating on issues not just
confined to Bhopal but on pan-India basis.
