UIAI chairman meets Orissa Chief Minister

Bhubaneswar: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIAI) was likely to start allotment of unique identification number to citizens next year, work for which would start from August this year on first phase.

This was stated by the chairman of the UIAI Nandan Nilekani after meeting chief minister Naveen Patnaik and other senior officials of the state government here today.

While the state government assured the UIAI all support, Nilekani said that Orissa had already started using finger print impressions in making of ration cards in Rayagada district.

Identification of the citizens would begin under the scheme of Multipurpose National Identity Card (MNIC) project.

In the first phase about 10 crores citizens will be provided with this unique numbers. About 60 crore of people would be allotted the number in next five years.

Sources said that the unique numbers would be allotted on the basis of 11 biometrics including 10 finger prints and the iris. There would be eight regional offices of the UIAI and each such office would cover two to three states.

An office at Hyderabad would cover Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
