Kolkata: Slamming the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee
government for announcing 10 per cent reservation in jobs for
Muslims, the BJP on Thursday said it would move court against the
decision.
"We have decided to move the court against the state
government's decision to offer 10 per cent reservation in jobs
to Muslims," state BJP president Rahul Sinha told reporters
here.
He said that two of its lawyers had gone to Hyderabad to
collect a copy of the ruling of the Andhra Pradesh High Court
which on February 8 had struck down the 4 per cent reservation
provided by the Andhra Pradesh government to selected sections
of Muslims in education and government jobs.
Stating that his party was against giving reservation on
the basis of religion, he said, "we don't have any objection
if reservation is provided to the economically weaker section
of society. Reservation on the basis of religion will also
create ill-feeling among communities."
The state government had earlier this week announced 10
per cent job reservation for Muslims educationally, socially
and economically backward, under the OBC category.
Sinha said the issue would be raised in the BJP National
Council meeting at Indore beginning on February 17.
