Lucknow: Union government would soon
complete construction of 7,000 kms of the 12,000 kms of
national highways to be laid across the country in 2009-2010,
Minister of State for Surface Transport, R P N Singh, said
here on Monday.
Affirming that the NDA government, which is credited for
initiating expansion of road network at the national level,
had constructed just 5,800 kms during its tenure, Singh said,
the UPA government would soon complete laying of 7,000 kms of
roads across the country in a year.
Informing that the government plans to construct four
expressways -- Delhi-Meerut, Dhanbad-Kolkata, Surat-Baroda and
Bangalore- Chennai -- across the country, the minister said
feasibility report for Delhi-Meerut highway via Dasna in Uttar
Pradesh is being prepared.
Bids have been invited for expansion of Delhi-Agra road.
They would be received by the end of next month, he said,
adding bids have been also invited for broadening roads
between Aligarh-Ghaziabad, Sitapur-Bareilly and Muzaffarnagar-
Haridwar.
Expressing satisfaction over the support provided by the
Uttar Pradesh government to the ongoing NH projects in the
state, Singh said, "the aim is to construct around 20 kms of
road per day but we need lots of money for it and a report for
raising resources to meet the aim has been prepared".
The minister, who was here to hold a review meeting with
officials of the state Public Works Department, said that as
of now 29 projects of the NHAI are going on in Uttar Pradesh.
